The Story of Bukalapak

Bukalapak was founded in 2010 by Achmad Zaky and two of his college friends Fajrin Rasyid and Nugroho Herucahyono, to help improve the conditions of Indonesian mom-and-pop kiosks, known as Warung, which did not benefit from the emergence of the Internet era.

Bukalapak is designed as an E-commerce marketplace to help the country’s millions of mom-and-pop kiosks, known as Warungs, to come online. Then, Bukalapak is acting as a third-party intermediary to support purchases between consumers and merchants. The main mission is we need to serve the underserved. As E-commerce, we need to improve lives not only for profit but also for the betterment of society.

In 2017, Mitra Bukalapak was launched to support millions of Warung in competing against modern retailers by connecting them to consumer goods distributors, narrowing the supply chain, lowering their sales prices, and increasing the profit margin micro-businesses. Bukalapak then continued to serve as a platform to enable transactions between consumers and merchants. The shops can also offer additional online services, such as bill payments and phone top-ups, allowing them to boost their income and get more out of their lives.
